Conference "On melting ground. Arctic Archaeology"

In cooperation with Eurasia Department of the German Archaeological Institute, the State Museum of Archaeology – short: smac is planning a special exhibition on Arctic Archaeology due to open in autumn 2023. The exhibition „On Thin Ice” (working title) aims to represent the cultural diversity, resilience and resourcefulness of Arctic peoples and to illustrate the unique cultural heritage threatened by climate change. Over millennia, humans have adapted to the environmental conditions of the Arctic. Despite its remote location, the Arctic has over 180,000 archaeological sites. Very few of them have been excavated and are therefore undisturbed. However, archaeological evidence and environmental archives that have been protected for thousands of years in the cold, humid climate of the Arctic are now in danger of being irretrievably lost as a result of climate change.
In preparation of the exhibition, an international conference on this topic will be held in October 2021 (20th to 22nd). The conference aims to portray the current state of research in the circumarctic region. We are looking for contributions on the archaeology, ethnology and anthropology of the Arctic as well as on climate change and its impact on the people of the region. 

The following sessions are scheduled to take place at the conference:
Session 1: The myth of the Arctic Circle: expeditions into the ice, colonization, missionary work
Session 2: Exploring the natural environment, the climate and its changes
Session 3a: Outline of cultural history: Cultures in the ice
Session 3b: Arctic Culture Heritage Management
Session 4: Current archaeological excavations of the last 15 years
Session 5: The Arctic in Museum Collections

The working language of the conference is English, with simultaneous translation into Russian. The conference contributions will be published in a series of the German Archaeological Institute prior to the opening of the exhibition.

Konferenz „On melting ground. Arctic Archaeology”
20.-22.10.2021, smac, Chemnitz

Für Herbst 2023 plant das Staatliche Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz – kurz: smac – in Kooperation mit der Eurasien-Abteilung des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts eine große Sonderausstellung zur Arktischen Archäologie. Die Ausstellung „Auf dünnem Eis“ möchte die Vielfalt der Kulturen,  die Widerstandsfähigkeit und den Einfallsreichtum der arktischen Völker zeigen und gleichzeitig auf die Gefährdung dieses einzigartigen Kulturraums hinweisen.

Ähnlich wie bei anderen Ausstellungsprojekten des Hauses soll vom 20. bis 22. Oktober 2021 eine internationale Tagung in Chemnitz stattfinden. Sie dient nicht nur der inhaltlichen Vorbereitung der Ausstellung, sondern wird erstmals in Deutschland den aktuellen Stand der archäologischen Forschung in der Arktis präsentieren. 

Folgende Vortragssessions sind geplant: 
1)    Mythos Polarkreis: Expeditionen ins Eis, Kolonialisierung, Missionierung
2)    Erforschung des Naturraums, des Klimas und seiner Veränderungen
3a)    Kulturgeschichtlicher Abriss: Kulturen im Eis 
3b)     Arktisches Kulturerbe-Management
4)    Aktuelle archäologische Ausgrabungen der letzten 15 Jahre
5)     Die Arktis in Museumssammlungen

Die Konferenzsprache ist  Englisch, mit Simultanübersetzung ins Russische. Es ist beabsichtigt, die Vorträge vor Eröffnung der Ausstellung als Tagungsband in einer Reihe des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts zu veröffentlichen.

Конференция «На тающей земле. Арктическая археология»
20-22 октября 2021, Государственный музей археологии Хемниц

В сотрудничестве с Евразийским отделением Германского археологического института Государственный музей археологии Хемниц (smac) планирует тематическую выставку по археологии Арктики, открытие которой должно состояться осенью 2023 года. Выставка «По тонкому льду» (рабочее название) нацелена на представление культурного разнообразия, устойчивости и изобретательности народов Арктики и освещение уникального культурного наследия, которому угрожает изменение климата. На протяжении тысячелетий люди адаптировались к экологическим условиям Арктики. В Арктике, несмотря на ее отдаленное географическое расположение, насчитывается более 180 000 археологических памятников. Эти памятники практически неразрушены, поскольку только на некоторых из них проводились раскопки. Однако археологические находки и экологические архивы, которые тысячелетиями хранились в холодном и влажном климате Арктики, теперь находятся под угрозой безвозвратной утраты в результате изменения климата.

В рамках подготовки к выставке 20-22 октября 2021 года состоится международная конференция по этой теме. Цель конференции – представить актуальное состояние исследований во всем арктическом регионе. Мы приглашаем докладчиков по археологии, этнологии и антропологии Арктики, а также по изменению климата и его влиянию на население региона.

Пргорамма конференции будет разделена на следующие секции:
Секция 1: Миф о полярном круге: экспедиции во льдах, колонизация, миссионерство
Секция 2: Изучение природной среды, климата и его изменений
Секция 3a: Культурно-исторический обзор: Культуры во льдах
Секция 3b: Охрана культурного наследия Арктики
Секция 4:  Археологические раскопки последних 15 лет
Секция 5: Арктика в музейных коллекциях

Рабочий язык конференции - английский, с синхронным переводом на русский. Материалы конференции будут опубликованы в серии Германского археологического института до открытия выставки.
