Are you still just living, or are you really living? The slogan of a well-known furniture store shows how closely living is connected to our lives. At home, we feel safe and secure: it's where we sleep best. We gather with friends and family at the kitchen table. We make ourselves comfortable on the couch or in a reading chair. Candlelight and lamps create a cozy atmosphere.
People, walls, and furniture—this interplay has been around longer than we think.
Over 450 exhibits from Chemnitz to Greece to Mongolia told us about the millennia-old history of living. The exhibition spanned the arc from campfires to energy-saving stoves, from storage pits to refrigerators, from headrests to fluffy pillows, from stools to thrones, and from wells to wave pool swings.
The exhibition and its accompanying program also addressed challenges of the present and the future. How and with whom do we want to live? Do we have a right to housing?
